Today we braved the cold and headed out on location to shoot our “ice queen” conceptual. We had one brave crew today who withstood temps of -21 (which totally killed our vagabond battery, and most of the batteries in our lighting equipment). Hats off to Cassandra, our model who braved a portion of the shoot without a shirt – she’s the bravest of the bunch, no question.
This shoot marks my first collaboration with Lethbridge makeup artist, Bonnie Ferguson. Bonnie and I exchanged quick ideas regarding colour palette and stylistic ideas the night previous and was given free reign on Cass’s look. I was pleased to find that clothing was provided from Cass’s own collection – the girl is a fashionista for certain!
Since all of our gear we hiked in had frozen, we went back to basics and used two off camera flashes and a scrim to light our set (courtesy of techniques learned from Don Giannatti in his Montana workshop last Summer). Acting as VALs (voice-activated-lightstands) were Jonny Ruzek and Brien Gehring who thankfully assisted throughout the entire shoot.
The “Ice Queen” shoot marks the last shoot of 2009, and I can’t be happier with the results as a year-ender. If you are reading this before midnight tonight, I sincerely wish you a Happy New Year – here’s looking out for a bright photographic future in 2010!
