This afternoon I grabbed my friend Starsha (who alternates between model, photographer and assist roles – the best way to learn!) and Brien G. and headed out to Hardieville, Alberta (just North of Lethbridge). We hauled a ton of lights, stands and battery packs out to an abandoned building frequented by music photographers, graffiti artists, and kids looking to get into a bit of mischief.
Starsha brought a few outfits to pose in while Brien and I tried a few different lighting setups. We settled on an AB1600, bare bulb behind Starsha to provide backlight and illuminate the tunnel, and setup an AB800 in a beauty dish as our key light with an ABR800 acting as fill (in a clamshell / glamour configuration). Brien shot most of the shots in today’s session, as his hands froze on our shoot yesterday – making him miss out on the shoot. I setup just one shot, and am happy with the result – I lit the scene for post production, as I knew I wanted to give this shot the tried and true “Dave Hill” look.
I’ve added my frames straight out of camera without post production to give you a contrasting view. Enjoy!

If you’d like to try this look out for yourself, it involves alot of “High Pass” filter in Photoshop – and exposure tweaking similar to a “one frame” HDR. Try out the following web tutorials for yourself:

Wicked awesome. I love the animation feel of the first shot.
