Ashley, Modern Pinup
Ashely and I shot for the first time over the Christmas break on an outdoor shoot, it was cold and at night – but we had a blast shooting in and around Lethbridge. Luckily this next shoot was indoors, under controlled lighting and with a larger crew.
Starsha Battrick (also a photographer, but also known for her role as a pinup stylist) joined Brien Gerhing (who often assists with me) to create a few new studio lighting setups to play with.
2009 marked an intense year for my lighting education, marking two trips to Vancouver’s Photo Workshops studio, a trip to work with the master of Lighting-Esstenials – Don Giannatti in Montana, a week in Boston for Photoshop World, and many collaborative shoots with the other talented photographers in Alberta Strobist, a group of 140+ photographers I founded and run on Flickr and throughout the province.
I’ve been excited to use the techniques learned by observing and shooting with North America’s best (Don Giannatti, Eddie Tap and Joe McNally) and Ashley’s shoot was no exception.
I’ve been working more with a 22” beauty dish as my main modifier, and gridded rim and backlights to play with dramatic lighting. Ashley’s look fits very well with the harsh reality the a beauty dish can bring to subject’s skin and we had a blast joking and hanging out for three hours in my home studio.
Here are some samples from the shoot, a few more to come:
