Lethbridge Management Student Society

I was recently on assignment for Management Matters, a publication of the University of Lethbridge (Management Faculty) where I got to meet Management Student Society President, Amanda Miller. The weather was gorgeous in Lethbridge as it was the day after a low fog had blanketed the city, leaving a trail of hoar frost covering the majority of trees in the area. We had initially planned to shoot with some of the sculptures on campus as photographic backgrounds, but quickly ditched that idea for more temporary beauty.

Assisted by Brien G., we setup studio strobes running on portable power to illuminate a section of trees on campus from behind, this bare-bulb light sent a beautiful spiral of backlight through the trees, adding fantastic separation and just enough drama to make things visually interesting. We lit Amanda with a 22HO beauty dish on a portable stand camera right, to provide “loop” style light and increase the contrast of shadow to help with the mood set by the backlight.

I think Amanda enjoyed the attention that a photo crew provides – we setup in the middle of an art gallery installation with hot pink walls for a series of second shots, right when management classes were dismissed for the day. She enjoyed a bit of ribbing by spectators who recognized her and provided a few cat-calls as well. Its not everyday that we get to be the center of attention, and thanks Amanda for being so fun and relaxed on the shoot – I believe it shows in the final frames!
