With steely resolve and an assistant by her side (parka at the ready) we shot Kelsey at the old Galt Mine in Lethbridge last night. Wearing nothing but a tiny black dress and with eyes beautifully adorned by Lethbridge’s Bonnie Ferguson – Kelsey braved the temperature and scaled concrete to transform a construction site into a texture-filled high-fashion runway.
I’m consistently amazed by the makeup sessions Bonnie brings to our team shoots, and the addition of hair stylist Sarah Gehring (Associates Body Care Ink) took our team from good to great. Sarah did a solid job of transforming Kelsey’s usual bangs down approach into an urban up-do (think: lots of pins) and we had a blast looking through all the eyelashes in Bonnie’s kit. The feathered lashes and green eye treatment are the highlight of the video (scroll down), take some time to view some of the behind-the-scenes footage.
Once Kelsey was ready, we took a trip to Galt Mine No. 8 where we shot with only the ambient moonlight reflected from the snow and our studio strobes and battery packs providing additional lighting. Brien and I had a great assist from Gordon – who came with Bonnie to the shoot. He was an excellent help keeping our model toasty in the care between setups, scaling walls, and holding video lights. Thanks again Gordon!
A giant thank you to Sarah, Bonnie, Kelsey, Brien, and Gordon for all the team effort on this shoot. Couldn’t do it without you!
Here’s some behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot, with audio graciously provided by The Square Waves.

Hey Michael i just had a quick question, what do you by a rear curtain sync? Thanks Jayce
Hi Jayce,
Thanks for taking the time to checkout the blog! Here’s a great explanation of rear curtain sync for flash:
thanks alot! i didnt realise thats how shutters worked! i like this blog alot! reminds me of lethbridge! i miss it a little
Cool pictures. Just curious how easy or difficult it is to get permission to take pictures in this location? Thanks.
Thanks Josh,
I’m sure its like any other location – find the decision maker, make a few calls – respect the location and the people so you can leave it open for future shoots and leave a great impression for the Lethbridge photographic community.
