Will You Be Mine, Valentine?

We had a total riot this weekend enjoying Valentine’s-themed functions in and around Lethbridge. We setup our photo booth at the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra Love Note’s ball and watched as event goers of all ages posed for the lens, with the camera controls at the ready. The Orchestra played beautiful tunes in the background to a dinner, dance and auction that I could only imagine being a part of. Much of the crowd were Lethbridge elite, and they treated us royally with our print-on-demand service.

Next, we moved onto Henotic restaurant and lounge – located in the old Lethbridge jail/firehall to finish filming for “The Square Waves” music video – directed by yours truly. Yesterday marked the final day of filming which included 2 actors, 4 locations, a restored 1969 pickup and 20 various extras. I’m excited to finish the final edits and share the video with you and sites like Much More Music and MTV Canada in the coming weeks. All video was shot in 1080p High Definition with my Canon 7D, I think you’ll agree that it more than held up to the task!

As we wrapped the video, Brien and I didn’t want to let such a great location go to waste (we had the run of the building, as it was closed for the holiday) – so we collaborated with our “makeup-hero” Bonnie Ferguson and our favourite “tattooed-teaser”, Model Ashley Hebert for a darker, more sinister Valentine’s themed shoot.

Ashely was fantastic and needed much less direction than with previous shoots, you can tell she’s been working at brushing up on pinup and boudoir posing in preparation for her submission to the online alternative beauty website; Suicide Girls (NSFW).

Photographer friend Chad Helfenbein also showed up at our location to work with model Andi Miller, makeup also by Bonnie. Chad’s use of continuous lighting is commendable for a night time rooftop location full of reds and gritty textures. We’ve just met Chad, but really enjoy his openness and lack of industry ego – open door policy my friend! Thanks for lending me your tripod again, I really should just invest in one of those handy tools…

I wish I would have taken some HD footage of the preparation and process for this shoot, but I was beat from all the work on the “Square Waves” video. Here are some of the frames I enjoyed most (which were originally processed in black and white, but found that this vintage tint suited the “Valentine’s Day” theme better). Enjoy!

Excellent work to all involved, Michael, Brien, Bonnie and Ashley. Week in and week out I am continually witnessing fabulous results from this group whose professionalism is tantamount to that of their friendliness. Equally commendable is their obvious passion for the art. Devoting countless working hours of their own precious spare time (hours of which a great deal of are unpaid), all in an effort to achieve the quality results you see above. If nothing more, all of those associated with said projects walk away with a fun and memorable experience. It does kind of weird me out however that you don’t own a tripod, like it’s some sort of covert method by which to lure me in. Creepy…

While verbose (is your comment longer than my actual post?), your thoughts are very kind and appreciated!

While I have a ton of gear, it’s true that I do not own a functioning tripod – one can attribute this missing bit o’ kit to my passion for portrait photography and higher shutter sync-speeds (and a lack of meth-addict shake). I found myself not “fitting in” with my first attempts to connect to the local Lethbridge photography scene, as it seemed most enthusiasts were long-exposure landscape photographers or ones who enjoyed the closeup world of macro photography – which I reject regularly (I’m simply just not “good” at those subjects).

So the tripod request was legit, and even more was our request to collaborate and hang out with other progressive photographers making things happen locally. The number one effort is to unite artists into a community that supports and encourages experimentation and growth, and not fret over pricing fee changes, digital disc inclusion and anything else that has a few photographers in a tizzy these days.

Thanks Chad (and countless others), who “get it” and participate rather than critique from afar.

I wouldnt want to spend my time any other way – any time Im invited to do a shoot Im excited and thankful for THEIR time and effort. The entire process is fun and the team is great, seeing the final product is the best part and we can all be proud of our part in it.

Ashley, what would I do without your patience, openness and appreciation for the process? Thanks for making our photography shine past the norm – you are really coming along with your posing skills and are a treat to work with. We will shoot as long as you’ll have us! Group hug time!
