Wake Up Sleepy Head!

I met Evangelos Lambrinoudis when he showed up as an extra for my music video (currently in production) for “The Square Waves” in Lethbridge, Alberta. A DJ and local musician, Evangelos (aka “Sleepy Head“) approached me for new photography for his electronic press kit and proposal for Sled Island (in Calgary, Alberta).
“Sleepy Head” spins electronica (in the dubstep genre) at gigs in Lethbridge and Calgary, mixing both original compositions, remixes and various tracks in his collection.

Evangelos was great to talk with on the phone, and had me dust off a lot of my once-forgotten Greek language skills obtained long ago in another place and time. It was fun speaking modern Greek (and Evangelos was very gracious with my broken grammar and horrid accent) in a place like Lethbridge – not something you hear every day, which provided an instant bond between us.

We decided to reject traditional EPK photography (band members in a field, outside a brick building, looking pouty in separate directions, boy band wanna-be’s), and go with a more modern, fashion approach (playing up the slacker, geek, electronic image). Evangelos was very open to direction, and very creative to work with – he made my job a breeze.

No assistant or makeup artist credits for this shoot, just a late-night solo session.

I’ve never met him yet, but you make me feel like I have. Good character capture :)

Thanks again Tanya, I think the direction here “played up” stereotypes and is a more modern approach to “regular” portraiture – we listened to some Sleepyhead tracks to get a feel for his art before pursuing this visual direction, I think that helped in the end.
