When I think of dance and photography, I immediately envision fellow photographer Tanya Plonka. Tanya’s involvement with Lethbridge’s Ammena Dance Company with belly dance and Salsa dancing at Henotic reinforces her strongpoints as a physical artist in addition to her visual skills (interestingly enough, Tanya also built both websites referenced).
What good is it for me to build Tanya up on my own blog? Well, aside from being a good personal friend (who I’ve shared “almost” all of my SEO strategies) – she’s a great person to know if an aspiring photographer wants to shoot dance performances. TANYA CAN’T SHOOT DANCE, BECAUSE SHE’S IN THE SHOW and can’t do both! LOL. Such was the case with Saturday’s “World of Dance” show at Lethbridge’s Yates Theatre.
Armed with a Nikon D3 and my Canon 7D, Brien Gehring and I scouted the theatre for the best positions to cover the show. I found a spot backstage with a clear view of the front of the house, while Brien floated throughout the seating area in the audience. The two vantage points made for a nice mix of visuals for the Ammena Dance company to later use in promotional materials, as well as provide imagery for participating dancers.
I was completely happy with the high ISO performance of my Canon 7D, especially when pit against such a stellar camera like the Nikon D3. The majority of these shots were placed at ISO 1250 for me, a tad higher for Brien – can you tell which is which? Its great that the newer entry level cameras keep up in low light. Its becoming apparent that its not the tool involved, but the skill of the photographer that sets images apart.
Here are some of the highlights of the night:
