Sucker Punched!

We had a ton of fun in our makeshift studio last night. Local photographer Jaime Vedres swung by to help test out our new social networking website for photographers – and hung around to assist our “David vs. Goliath” photo session. Hammering the shutter was Brien Gehring (who just pulled off a killer maternity session in the very same studio setup days before – and no, not for me, LOL). Lighting, concept and direction by yours truly (who also unfortunately got to model for this one), and the Lucky Jaime – who got to repeatedly sucker punch me for effect.

If you believe a photo speaks volumes, then this one is no exception. Often life feeds us a steaming plate of yuck, but the best defense is to bounce back 100%, take one to the chin and keep going. Never stop. Get out there and make the best damnned images you can, collaborate with anyone willing, stick with the “doers”  and leave the “talkers” behind.

Our lighting setup was very dramatic, yet very unstable! We had an AB1600 held directly overhead (with a beautydish / sock combo) for the toplighting, and an ABR800 ringflash for fill (with 20 deg grid to control spill). I’m 6’5″ tall – so the boom we normally use didn’t fit the bill, we adapted a painting pole to hold the toplight and stuck it between a shelf and stepladder as a makeshift boom. That wouldn’t fly for studio risk insurance, good thing this was just a personal project!

Create some fake sweat AND get rid of some studio FUNK. Two birds, one stone.

A fun outtake - Its all an act, I'm a big softy (with big tattoos).

Did you have a black eye the next day? Artists must suffer… lol A good tip for getting sweat to pop on film is rub vegetable oil on the skin and spray with water. The water will bead up nice instead of soaking in. Love the pics!
